Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived in a musical family on 9 August 1993, in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is the cousin of daughter to the singing sensation Dionne. Whitney's mother and her began singing professionally in the church of New Hope Baptist of Newark at the age of fifteen years old. They performed the back vocals in Chaka Khan's track in 1978 Im Every Woman. Her mother, Jermaine and Lou Rawls were some of the artists she backed up. Also, she was a model for Seventeen Magazine in 1981. The year 1981 saw her begin working as a singer with the New York-based funk group Material. Her quality vocal performance of this group that attracted interest of recording label like Arista. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut record for an artist in the year 1985. The album All My Love was released in 1985 and was a top one smash. The album debuted in 1987 and sold 25 million copies around the world. The Whitney album followed in 1987 and the singles How Do Broken Hearts GO and I Wanna Dance With Somebody helped to expand on the popularity of her debut album. It was, however it was the 1992 film The Bodyguard that solidified her standing as one of the most well-known performers. While the movie and the actor's performance weren't much praised, her soundtrack album with her version of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was her top single and albums for many months. The album sold over 44 million copies around the world. The same year, she was married to Bobby Brown who was a former New Edition singer. She had their sole daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown in March 1993. Her drug addiction began in the middle of 1993 and at the time of her death in 1996, she'd been a frequent user.
